Grandparents are Trendy!

We’re working on a couple of really neat Family Volunteering initiatives with different partners and it’s got us thinking a lot about a new trend – Grandparents volunteering with their grandkids.

My own grandma was a women ahead of her time. She was an outspoken feminist who instilled a real sense of independence and confidence in her children. I think about her passion for art, her curiosity, and her interest in humanity and I understand why this trend is taking off. I would love the opportunity to see this woman in action!

Grandparents have an opportuntity to share their interest and community spirit with their grandkids to build lasting memories based around volunteer activities. After all, we learn and remember very best when “doing”. Non-profit organizations are becoming more aware of this trend, but can still do more to accommodate the generations of volunteers.

I hope that my fellow managers of volunteers will meet this challenge with creative and meaningful roles for families. Family volunteering boasts many benefits. You can take responsibility for instilling a love of community in the next generation by creating these opportunities to engage the volunteer family, grandparents and all!

What a terrific idea, Janet! I’m inspired by it but will have to wait until my sweet little grandbaby is up and walking. Unless there’s something we could do with her hooked to my hip?

I’ll bet you’ll get lots of interest. I’ll forward the invitation to my grandparent pals. Thanks!

  2. Thanks Martha, and I’m sure there’s something you can do with that grandbaby on your hip!
