‘Tis the season! Employee Volunteering for the Holidays

Every year , many employees around the city donate their time and talents through volunteer activities over the holidays. There are many ways in which you can get your team involved in the community.

Here are some ideas to get your started:

Be an elf for a day! Many non-profits run Christmas wrapping programs during the month of December. This flexible volunteer opportunity makes for a great team building opportunity while getting everyone into the Christmas spirit! Check out Meals on Wheels,Innfrom the Cold and Calgary Family Services for an opportunity at a mall near you. Sign up quick – they fill up fast!

Decorate a non-profit. Many client serving non-profits enjoying have a decorated office for the holidays, but do not necessarily have the resources or the time to make it happen! Take a small team from your office and spend an afternoon spreading Christmas cheer!

Be a driver for good! Help deliver wreaths for the Calgary Urban Project Society (CUPS) one afternoon. Don’t have a car? No problem, they need help with organizing the deliveries at their office as well! Contact Calgary Urban Project Society (CUPS) for more information.

Adopt a family and incorporate wrapping the gifts as a team, driving them to the non-profit together or volunteering at the non-profit with the donation drive. This will increase the impact the donation drive has on understanding of how you are helping. Consider these Volunteer Calgary non-profit members: NeighbourLink Calgary, The Salvation Army, YWCA,Innfrom the Cold, Calgary Urban Project Society (CUPS), Discovery House and Calgary Emergency Women’s Shelter.

Too complicated? Simplify! Challenge your team to do a good deed and then have them report back on what they did over a pot luck lunch! Their deed could be anything from being a Snow Angel by helping a neighbour shovel their walks, taking an elderly person in their community to do their Christmas shopping or helping a friend in need with their Christmas baking.
